Have a great new year

Here I am at Walter and Courtney's New Year's Eve dance party. It is good. There is no dancing. This may be because it is actually a dog party. A dog movie party, to be precise. There is white wall spectration. There are dog movies. There is Ursula 1000. Walter is now dancing. So now Courtney is taking pictures. Wendy is playing blog supervisor/cox. I have finished blogging because the cava has clearly kicked in.

Hangin' with the Lones

but not lonely. I'm here at my friends Lynne and Tor's house with their two lovely Aiden and Anders hanging post-potroast. We've eaten, drunk and now we're merry, waiting to dive into the decadent chocolate cookies.

I am showing them what a blog is and does.

Christmas tradition no. 6,420,111

Went to see the Nutcracker last night with my mom. Lovely sets, as ever. Lots of little kids dancing their toes off, which is always nice to see. The peacock was especially good, and a nice change, as she was on her own. I do like a good corps de ballet, but sometimes it's nice to just see one dancer, and not a tutu-ed one at that. While I wasn't totally wowed and some of the staging was a bit muddled and confusing, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

Had a nice meal at Perche No beforehand, with some lovely chocolate amaretto mousse to finish it off. Very recommendable dining location, if a bit spendy. The service was friendly and excellent, and I chose, on this occasion only, to tip like I wasn't in Paris.

A fine Christmas is being had by all, especially me. Let me just go on record as saying I lurves Christmas. Not religious. Not even especially commercial. I just like the seeking and finding cool things for people, without stressing about it. Of course, especially now, seeing them is best of all. Eating without inhibitions is also a fine element. I like the lights. I like the ornaments. I like the trees. I like people being more friendly than normal, and try to forget that we should be doing that all year round. I like the excuse to listen to cheese Christmas music (A Cocktail Christmas is on the CD player right now.)
I've seen just about everybody at least once, and so far have managed to fit in a Manhatten, Dick's deluxe, Thai/Asian food a couple of times, a few breakfast omelettes, Christmas dinner with two kinds of pie, teriyummy, dim sum. There have been word games and Value Village, cooking aforesaid Christmas dinner and baking gingerbread cookies, a driver's license renewal and a YMCA kids' basketball game. Gift bags and Spanish music mix CDs have been prepared and distributed. Strangely enough, given my present location, very little coffee has been drunk, relatively speaking.
Being out in Burien's not so bad now that Kathryn and John have graciously lent me one of their cars, a zippy little thing that gets me around (and around and around) just fine. I've had flying visits late at night, movie nights that turned into chat and word games, many naps on various sofas and easy chairs, cocktail parties filled with interesting folks, loooooonnnnngggg brunches, games of the non-word variety with adults and children alike, and many stops at shops and stores for errand-running type endeavors.
I had a meeting with the head of the Museology program at the UW. Sounds interesting, and this has now become my new thing to work towards. Still working on timing, and as a subset of this project, what the heck I'm going to study next year. The possibilities fortunately/unfortunately verge on endless. (Which reminds me, I really must go buy that book, Fortunately/Unfortunately.) Posted you will be kept, quite literally.
I have also had the joy and pleasure of Christmas greetings via e-mail in three languages from as many continents. (If only McCool would chime in with Asia, I'd be almost covered.) In short, it's all good. Except for the work ... The work, I want the work, 'cause the money comes from the work. Only problem with the work, though, is you gotta actually do the work to get the money that comes from the work. Hmmm, will have to devise something to deal with that.

Arriving on a jet plane

Home I am, and tired am I, oh yes indeedy. Here I sit, translating away, while the clock on my computer keeps reminding me of what time it is in Spain. Am going to cover it with an advent calendar door if it's not careful!

Uneventful journey (and that's how we likes 'em), except for when they broke the beam or whatever that connects the tug-cart thing that pushes back the plane to the plane itself and had to run around Philadelphia airport looking for another beam or screws of something. Have no idea how long the whole thing took, as I was completely crashed out, but we got to Seattle an hour late.

Airline food just the same, am sad to report. Did see someone boozing without paying though, I think. Will investigate upon return. My old trick: order a something and Jack Daniels and then just take the JD home, as don't ya know ya ain't supposed to drink on long flights?! My traditional airport breakfast cured ham and cheese bocadillo got delayed because check-in took about forever, so I ate in on the plane. When the indifferent chicken piccata arrived, I was logically not so enthusiastic. Ate the also indifferent fruit salad and saved the cheese spread, crackers, butter, mini croissant and Italian almond sweet for post-nap munchies. Good call.

The food for puchase on the U.S. leg was a joke. By the time they'd gotten to us, all that was left were the "fun packs" or some such nonsense: chips inside salsa (according to the accented waitress of unclear origens), laughing cow-style cheese triangles, bread sticks and an absolutely massive box of Nestle Crunch clusters, which I ate far too many of and then fell back asleep in a sugar-induced coma-like state. Note to self: eat in the airport, at least you can see what you're going to get. All I wanted to do in the airport was sit and work, though, so I couldn't be bothered to negotiate General Kung Fu's chicken (or some such nonsense) or the uninspiring Italian place on the concourse.

Was greeted in Seattle by Connie, we dropped my stuff off and then headed to the Capital Club for some Manhattan/Cosmopolitan action. Nice with no smoke!!! They had no hummus on offer last night, so a Dick's run was necessary, and my confused stomach readily accepted the much-desired deluxe and fries. (Sadly, I forgot to get tartar. Oh well, another visit will just have to be in order.)

And here I sit, where I have been for much of the day, "working". There was a dim sum break, and a Connie's son Nash's basketball game run, and various phone calls, but other than that, it's been working, or trying to avoid same by discussing interesting and life-shattering events and thoughts with the locals. Oh, and blogging!

Pilates make you go ow!

For two weeks now, Cat, Katie and I have been doing a Pilates class once a week with Kate, one of the new gals in town. (No, I am not making these names up, and no, I have not changed mine to Caitlin or Kathleen, or some other Ca/Ka name to fit in better.) She's an excellent teacher, and I think we're all really enjoying it. The first week wasn't bad: some explanation, a bit of practicing the switching on of our ole core muscles and some basic exercises. This week, however, she brought out this wonderful/terrible side things that introduced me to my lats in a most definite fashion. Laughing was a bit of an experience yesterday, but today I'm mostly back to normal. Now to practice while I'm in Seattle!

No, not our uni-, bi-, tri- or any other centennial year, but my grade on my "State, Economy and Nation in 19th-Century Europe" course. Hooray for me! With my 80 for the course work, that means a nice solid Pass 2 for the course. I felt I'd done well on the exam, but not distinction well, so this is about what I expected. Oh! for more time to get some distinctions again. Alas and alack! this is not to be. Still, I'm happy.

(Of course, we don't talk about the Greek exam, which I did not do so well on, but that's to be expected: I went in to fail it and get a resit because I really do want to learn that Greek stuff, believe it or not, and I really was not able to keep up last year. My 21 was also about what I expected.)

Crema di mascarpone

Mascarpone, god's perfect cheese food

Tonight was my last Italian class for the year. They'll be continuing on next week, merrily singing the Italian Christmas carols the teacher threatened us with tonight, but I'll be in sultry Seattle enjoying myself and forgetting everything I've learned. Actually, my goal over this holiday is to sort out my notes once and for all. Hah! Like that'll ever happen. Still, sorted notes or not, I do seem to actually be learning the stuff. Imagine what I could do if I actually studied!

Tuesday night we didn't have class, as, this being a proper language school, they actually give a party for the students, with FOOD! PRIZES! DRINK! At mine, we just have potato chip/cheeto/pork scratching-type snacks and cheap cava while you're in class warbling out English Christmas carols and explaining about cranberry sauce. The absolute best part of the crema di mascarpone, a lovely concoction which is poured over delicious Bauli panettone and pandoro. I like mine with a few walnuts and dried apricots on top.

I post the recipe here so I'll have access to it over the holiday, perhaps for accompanying white wall spectration, or whatever it's called. Maybe this time I won't go overly crazy and make more than an army can eat, like last year!

Crema di Mascarpone

Ingredients: 1/2 kilo mascarpone, 5 eggs, sugar to taste, 1 glass marsala or sweet wine

Put the mascarpone into a bowl, and stir by hand until creamy. Add the egg yolks, sugar, wine and blend well. Whisk the egg whites separately and fold gently into the cream. Chill in the refrigerator. Pour over panettone or pandoro and enjoy.

La Familia

I've just finished watching my very first film all in Italian, without subtitles! This, of course, means that I missed about 1/4 of the actual words they were saying, but I still was able to follow at least the gist of the entire film. I understood much more of the dialogue than I expected; I was surprised. As the name suggests, it was about a family, and perhaps the universal nature of the theme helped. Still, I'm quite proud of myself. BTW, I actually liked it, which helped, I'm sure!

Pantomime fun

Just got back from this year's Madrid Players panto. A fine thing it was yet again, if not very politically correct. (Or geographically so, as apparently the Plains Indians now have totem poles!) A good time was had by all, especially the kids. Before the show, Séamus and Aisling had myself, Sam, Josue and Emma round for a nice bit of raclette action, followed by delicious brownies. (They're become quite the whizzes at that brownie business, and I might have to take the recipe away, lest folks discover how easy it is and stop offering me marrige proposals if I'll promise to back them on a regular basis!)

If you're not familiar with the Christmas pantomime phenomenon, I'll just say, due to lack of time (a pressing feature in my life this week, hence the few posts), I'll just say: check out a few scripts.

Photos to come when I get a bit of time.

No More Shall We Part

You know how sometimes you recover records you'd forgot you owned but used to play all the time? I'm currently listening to no more shall we part by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and a fine thing it is too. "We've bred all our kittens white so you can see them in the night" says it all. When I hear that line, I give my black kitty a kiss.

Turkey Thanksgivingday

Step back a week or so in time with me to Thanksgiving in Madrid. My hectic holiday shopping schedule has made it impossible to post these thrilling shots earlier.

When I firsted started doing Thanksgiving in Madrid, Pedro and I would usually go to a restaurant. Then I started organizing group meals in a restaurant, which we did for a couple years, at Tony Roma's near the Real Madrid stadium. This was followed by a year at my friends Sam and Josue's, again with a special multinational cast, Basques flown in from France included that year. Then it was two years at fellow American Miriam the vegetarian's, who bravely put up with my turkey shenanigans in the kitchen, and whose husband very valiantly dealt with a headful turkey the year I forgot to check whether they'd cut it off for me! (Miriam headed to the balcony, I shouted support from the kitchen, and Josue Luis battled the poor bird.)

These years featured a high American quotient, which was fairly unprecedented. A couple of times, I had been the only American present. People generally seem quite curious about the event and want to give it a try, and I enjoy sharing my favorite holiday with all and sundry.

This year was again at Tony Roma's, as I've just been feeling too overwhelmed by life to sort a meal out. We had to go to another of their restaurants, and the results weren't as good, although everyone had a great time regardless. Red wine on a weeknight'll do that for you, I find!

There was one other American present, Alex from Vermont, who's just started at the BLC this year and speaks fluent Spanish. There he is, with dorky-looking me. Alex was sat next to Beth from England, who's doing a French-English translation course but doesn't speak much Spanish. She was sat next to Jaime, Faye-of-France-fame's boyfriend, who is having a great time in level 2 English class with Singing Grammar, and who somehow manages to communicate with Beth just fine, as she lives with them. Jaime is next to Turkey Thanksgivingday mainstays Sam and Josue, an English-Spanish couple who are both fully bilingual. They're the only ones, besides me, to have been to every meal. Then between Sam and I was Faye, who is looking very askance at her "potatoes", which had neither been potatoes in the recent past nor were they actually warm.

After a dirty glass disaster, and the decision to not even mention the dubious cleanliness of the plates, etc., we started out with a lovely "Union Salad", which required a description on the menu, as clearly no real 'Merikan has actually heard of such a thing. The Turkey Thanksgivingday itself was quite nice, but only accompanied by the aforementioned severly dodgy potatoes, a cabbage beet concoction which was good, and a raisin and berry sort of chutney, which I've had before and which, despite not being actual cranberry sauce, is very tasty. I used to make tubs of cranberry sauce and take them along, but didn't this year, which I think Josue was disappointed at.

I'd already made pecan pie for work, so the fact that desert was VERY COLD apple pie, well really apple tart, didn't matter match. Despite it's chilliness, it tasted nice, and a little coffee and patxaran do wonders for a chilly stomach. The service was good, and cute, and kept us supplied with alcohol, so despite the place's dishwashing and heating foibles, we had a nice evening.

I hate helicopters

The return of a number of deaths involving helicopters in today's casualty list disturbed me for personal reasons (my father died in a helicopter crash), but also reminded of last week's surreal news. The leader of the Spanish opposition, Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party, and the president of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aquirre, were involved in a helicopter accident. They were talking off from inside a bull ring in a suburb of Madrid, when the helicopter apparently hit the side of the bull ring and crashed outside. It all begs the question of just why they chose such a bizarre location to take off and land, not to mention just why they were running around in helicopters in the first place. Nasty things, if you ask me.
